Institute of Aircraft Cabin Systems Selects NexentaStor as a Unified Storage Solution for Scalability and Flexibility

Munich,  3rd October 2012 – Nexenta Systems, the world’s leading provider of OpenStorage solutions for the enterprise, today announced that the Institute of Aircraft Cabin Systems at Hamburg University of Technology has chosen Nexenta as its OpenStorage solution to support its entire virtualised environment. Using a NexentaStor SAN, the Institute will have access to the advanced storage features it needs, with the ability to use in-house hardware, and without being locked into a single vendor.

The Institute researches solutions that enable companies to continuously push the boundaries of existing aviation technologies. Founded in 2008, and funded by Airbus Operations, the Institute still is in a growth phase. It works with aircraft manufacturers and its suppliers to advance research and development.

To ensure the education of its next generation engineers, the Institute relies on professional and modern IT solutions. But like every educational institution, it has to work within a strict budget. Prof. Dr. Ralf God, head of the Institute, explains: “Like nearly all educational institution, our budget isn’t as large as we would like it to be. Major hardware renewals are only granted every five years. In computing terms, this is a long time and, with current data growth, it was clear from the start that future upgrades had to be made using white-box hardware that we could afford. So vendor lock-in was certainly a no-go.”

After researching the market, the Institute opted for a storage system from German channel storage specialist Thomas Krenn, based on NexentaStor. This solution allows the Institute to have access to many enterprise storage features whilst avoiding being locked in to one specific vendor.  Florian Hettenbach, product manager storage & virtualisation at Thomas-Krenn, added: “With the requirements for performance and reliability in an all virtualised environment, and with a relatively small budget, a solution built on NexentaStor was clearly the best option for the Institute.”

NexentaStor provides the Institute with a cost-effective, high performance storage solution that includes enterprise class features, such as hybrid storage pooling, unlimited snapshots, deduplication, and thin provisioning. Amongst a lot of systems related to research projects, the fully redundant system supports applications like Microsoft SharePoint® Server, Microsoft SQL Server® and Microsoft Visual Studio Team Foundation Express. The high performance storage infrastructure boasts 26x 3.5”-NearLine-SAS disks in RAID-z2 groups of 6 devices per group for data storage, 2 hot spare disks, 2 SAS disks for system storage and two 160GB SSDs for read cache. As NexentaStor is based on open source technology, the Institute of Aircraft Cabin Systems is not locked in to buying more expensive products from a particular vendor or paying unnecessary mark-ups for standard features, but can scale up to 144 disks or use JBODs, making cost for storage predictable.

“Overall, it was an easy decision to go with Nexenta. OpenStorage gives us the best of both worlds high performance and great features at an affordable price”, said Thorsten Windrath, the Institute’s head of IT.
