OpenStorage in an Open City: Nexenta European User Conference

I’m in Amsterdam with a dozen or more Nexentians and some 200 attendees at our European User Conference.

Today and tomorrow we have Certified Nexenta Engineer training.  We’re building on CNE trainings this year in the United States, Japan, Hong Kong, and Saint Petersburg Russia - all of which together show that the community of Nexenta resellers is becoming a major force in storage.  Nexenta resellers will sell over $300 million of systems based on NexentaStor this year; that is up from approximately $70 million last year.

Friday we have a user conference, including a general session at which noted storage expert Chris Evans will speak.  You can see Chris’ blog, the Storage Architect, here.

After the general session there will be three tracks:

    • One focused on NexentaStor and High Availability - where I’d imagine there will be some buzz over a soon to be published case study of a stretch cluster, metro cluster deployment.  This track also covers information on NexentaStor and backup and other core storage use cases.

    • A second focused on Virtualization and VDI - here we will see presentations on how to size for VDI, and existing best practices and directions we are taking with Citrix and VMware VDI specifically.

    • A third focused on the Cloud - Sessions here include one that attempts to explain why we’re seeing massive uptake by carriers, and another one that discusses and demonstrates how to scale NexentaStor horizontally under one name space.

I always learn something at these shows.  The sessions are intended to be example of open collaboration; with feedback and discussions happening real time.

We’re also hosting a social event for all attendees Thursday night.  I’m sure I’ll learn a lot there as well.  It sounds a bit sappy - but the only way I can explain our record setting growth is unprecedented word of mouth.  People connect with Nexenta in ways that are too easy for me to forget between the jet lag and day to day demands of my job; more than anything, I’m looking forward to hearing much more about what makes our users and partners and fellow Nexentians tick over the next few days.  It comes down to people trying to make the (storage) world a better, more open, place. Which almost ties this back to Amsterdam.

For those of you that cannot make it, we are not, unfortunately, able to ustream over the hotel’s network.  But we will try hard to tweet and to share the session materials as they become available.  Keep an eye on @nexenta on Friday and the days to come.
