Scary numbers - UK edition

So here’s a thing. For some time now we’ve been writing our boilerplate as the following:

“LogLogic is the IT Data Management Company. More than 1,200 enterprise customers worldwide entrust their most sensitive IT data to LogLogic’s award-winning products. For more information on LogLogic and IT Data Management, visit us on the web at www.loglogic.com or on Twitter or Facebook.”

The questions that arise from this are: what does that mean, and is 1,200 a big number?

The second part of the question is easy to answer, yes it is. 1,200 is a huge number when you consider that our target market is global businesses that have greater than $1 billion in revenue. Look it up, there aren’t that many of them. Then we have the slightly embarrassing fact that it’s also a lie. The true number is actually bigger, but for reasons that we can’t disclose, we can’t share it with you. Well, that’s not true, we could tell you, but we’d have to kill you – if you get my drift.

So, back to the first question. We’ve commissioned 3 surveys to test the water with IT data management - two we did ourselves, and one a major analyst firm did for us. Watch this space for the bulk of the results.

Here, I’d like to share with you the scary numbers from our UK survey.

  • Only 14 percent of survey respondents could say that they highly trusted the quality of their IT data and had no concerns.  Staggering then that 81 percent said they used their IT data for compliance purposes.
  • A huge 41 percent admitted that they couldn’t readily access all of their IT data and 48 percent added that it wasn’t in the right, useable format.
  • 49 percent said that they couldn’t easily create reports. Confirming this, the research found that only 16.2 percent could create IT data reports in real time, 25 percent would take longer than five hours (and 13 percent of those estimating it taking longer than 24 hours).
  • Of those who could create reports and insights from their IT data, only 26 percent said they were actionable.
  • 43 percent don’t use their IT data to help manage service level agreements and 44 percent don’t use it for operational planning either.
  • 36 percent of respondents estimate that less than 49 percent of the IT data that they need to need to report on and analyze is available to them and accessible for compliance, security or operational intelligence purposes.

What’s our take away from all of this? Next time a vendor tells you that they include “log management” in their SIEM because “it’s a no brainer”, point out that to them that their solutions aren’t working for the market place. Searching is nice, but finding is better, and to be able to truly find, you need proper IT data management.
