First HIPAA Major Fine

TheatPost is reporting on the first ever HIPAA fine of a Maryland company. We’ve known that HIPAA was a force in US healthcare for sometime, but until recently there was no serious enforcement measures. This all changes with the 2009 HITECH act, which we’ve previous written about. While this is not the first serious penalty meted out by the government (talk to the guy sent to jail in 2011), This is the largest known monetary fine. To be clear, this appears to be as a result of not responding to subpoenas and effectively telling the feds to take a hike. This is usually always a risky thing to do. So here’s the 2 takeaways from this episode:

To be clear, I am not saying we can keep you out of jail, that’s up to you. But we can give you some decent reports and workflow on your HIPAA compliance status.
